Medicaid & Schools

Supporting Student Health. Strengthening Our Schools.

Helping WCPS maximize resources while supporting the health and well-being of our students.

Virginia's Medicaid & Schools Program allows public school divisions to receive reimbursement for certain health-related services provided to students who are enrolled in Virginia Medicaid or FAMIS.

These funds help school divisions offset a portion of the costs associated with providing important health and related services to students during the school day. At Warren County Public Schools, Medicaid reimbursement helps support the services our students need to be healthy, safe, and ready to learn.

What is the Virginia Medicaid Reimbursement Program?

The Virginia Medicaid & Schools Program is a partnership between Virginia's Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), and local school divisions. Through this program, eligible school divisions can submit claims to Medicaid for certain covered health services provided by qualified school-based providers. The program does not provide Medicaid coverage to students. Instead, it allows schools to receive partial reimbursement for eligible services they are already providing to students who have Medicaid or FAMIS coverage.

Why is this important?

Schools provide many health-related services as part of supporting students throughout the school day. Medicaid reimbursement helps WCPS recover a portion of the cost of providing some of those services. Reimbursement helps WCPS continue to support the health and well-being of our students while maximizing available funding for our schools.

What Services Can Be Reimbursed? Depending on the student's needs, provider qualifications, documentation, and Medicaid requirements, reimbursable school-based services may include:

  • Nursing Services

  • Mental & Behavioral Health Services

  • Speech-Language Services

  • Audiology

  • Occupational Therapy

  • Physical Therapy

  • Personal Care Services

  • Applied Behavioral Therapy

  • Medical Evaluations

  • Specialized Transportation (when applicable)

Virginia also allows reimbursement for certain health-related administrative activities. Virginia Department of Education

What Does Parental Consent Mean?

Parents and guardians may be asked to provide consent allowing the school division to share certain information with Medicaid for reimbursement purposes.

Consent does NOT:

❌ Enroll your child in Medicaid or FAMIS
❌ Change your child's Medicaid benefits
❌ Affect your child's eligibility for healthcare
❌ Cause your family to receive a bill from WCPS
❌ Use up your child's healthcare benefits

Consent DOES:

✅ Allow WCPS to share required information with DMAS
✅ Allow WCPS to request reimbursement for eligible services
✅ Help WCPS recover a portion of the cost of providing those services

DMAS explains that information shared for this purpose is used to determine the services provided and the amount the school division may be reimbursed, with health information protected by law.

Where Does the Money Go?

Medicaid reimbursement goes to the school division — not directly to the individual provider or family.
The reimbursement helps WCPS offset eligible costs associated with providing health-related services to students.
In other words: Medicaid reimbursement helps WCPS make the most of the resources available to support our students.

Our Goal

Provide the service. Document the service. Submit the service. Maximize reimbursement.

At Warren County Public Schools, our goal is to ensure that eligible services are properly documented and that WCPS receives the reimbursement available through Virginia's Medicaid & Schools Program.

Because every dollar recovered is another resource we can put toward serving our students!

Why Does This Matter to WCPS?

Every eligible service we properly document and submit represents an opportunity for WCPS to recover a portion of the cost of services we are already providing. The goal isn't to provide services simply because they are reimbursable. The goal is to make sure WCPS receives the reimbursement it is entitled to for eligible services that are already being provided to our students. That funding can help support the people, programs, and services that make a difference in students' lives.
